Editor beware: False visualization confuses readers

Daily Mining Gazette layout blooper

OMG DMG, we’re not sure who’s in the bloody picture – the boater or a bomb victim in Turkey – but we know who has egg on the face. FVAs can lead to lawsuits and loss of credibility. The good news is these blunders are easily avoided during the layout process,. If you aren’t sure a photo will be mistakenly identified with the wrong story, ask for a second set of eyes on the page. This is not quite as bad as one I remember from my reporting days featuring a plane-crash scene next to the headline “Thousands Attend County Fair.” Sending healing wishes for peace and well-being to our local boaters as well as those affected by the unrest in Turkey and the surrounding region.
